One of the main attractions of Costa Chica is its stunning beaches. Each beach has its own unique vibe, making it easy to find the perfect spot for relaxation or adventure.

Playa La Boquilla is a hidden gem known for its soft golden sands and crystal-clear waters. This beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying a peaceful day by the sea.

You can also find one of our favorite small beachside restaurants, Bahias de la Luna, serving fresh seafood and amazing drinks. Try the ceviche, a local favorite, made with the catch of the day.

Playa Mermejita, Mazunte

Featuring golden sand, rugged cliffs, and known for it's stunning sunsets this is one of our favorite spots. Enjoy a wonderful cocktail and live music with even salsa dancing some nights at El Chiringuito.

For those seeking a lesser known tranquil beach head to Agua Blanca. Located between Mazunte and Puerto Escondidio the beach is lined with palapa style restaurants with fresh seafood and bebidas. Natural pools provide a safe place for kids to dip and play in the water. Bring a snack, umbrella and towels and enjoy!

Cultural Experiences

Costa Chica is not just about beautiful beaches; it is also rich in culture and traditions. The region is home to several indigenous communities, each with its own unique customs and practices.

Traditional Festivals

One of the best ways to experience the local culture is by attending one of the many festivals held throughout the year.

  • Fiesta de la Virgen de la Soledad: This festival takes place in September and celebrates the patron saint of the region. Expect colorful parades, traditional music, and delicious food.

  • Día de los Muertos: Celebrated in early November, this festival honors deceased loved ones. You will see vibrant altars, marigold flowers, and families gathering to remember those who have passed.

Local Markets

Visiting local markets is another great way to immerse yourself in the culture. The markets are filled with fresh produce, handmade crafts, and traditional foods.

  • Mercado de Pochutla: Located in the town of San Pedro Pochutla, this market is a bustling hub of activity. You can find everything from fresh fruits to handmade textiles.

  • Mercado de Puerto Escondido: This market is known for its seafood. Sample local delicacies and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Culinary Delights

Oaxacan cuisine is famous for its bold flavors and unique ingredients. Costa Chica offers a variety of dishes that reflect the region's culinary heritage.

Tacos de Pescado

One must-try dish is the tacos de pescado, or fish tacos. Made with fresh catch from the ocean, these tacos are typically topped with cabbage, salsa, and a squeeze of lime.

You can find them at beachside stands or local restaurants.

Tlayudas

Another local favorite is tlayudas, a large, crispy tortilla topped with beans, cheese, and various meats. This dish is often served with salsa and is perfect for sharing.

Mezcal

No visit to Oaxaca is complete without trying mezcal, a traditional spirit made from agave. Many local bars and restaurants offer tastings, allowing you to sample different varieties and learn about the production process. Our go-to mezcalarita is Gota Gorda located in the fun town Zipolite (fun fact: Zipolite is the only legal full nudist beach in Mexico).

For those who love the outdoors, Costa Chica offers plenty of opportunities for adventure. From hiking to water sports, there is something for everyone.
